Campbell edges High Point in five-set thriller

The High Point University volleyball team came out on the losing end of a five-set battle at Campbell on Tuesday. Junior Courtney Johnk had a career-high 20 kills and sophomore Michelle Chakirelis hit .462 with 13 kills.

Lauren Bell had a career-high 56 assists, setting up three Panthers for double-figure kills including Kristin Heldt with a career-high 16. Bell finished the night with 15 digs and three aces. Junior Molly Barlow also posted a career high with 28 digs.

“Tonight we were on the road, in a hostile environment and we were inconsistent,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “We had moments when we were great and moments when we didn't make plays we should. I felt like we had the better players on the floor. Courtney, Michelle and Kristin put together a great game offensively but Campbell figured out a way to win. For the next week in practice we will see who shows the resolve and leadership to pick us back up.”

HPU battled back from a 2-1 deficit to force a fifth set. The set was tied 13-13 when Johnk served the ball in to the net to give Campbell match point. Kelsey Marek put down her fourth kill of the night to win the match for the Camels.

Campbell improves to 11-13 (4-4 Big South) while HPU drops to 6-16 (4-4 Big South).

High Point took set one 25-20, outhitting the Camels .400 to .097. The match was tied 17-17 when Chaklirelis gave HPU the advantage with her fourth kill of the match. The Panthers finished the match on 8-3 run. The last three HPU points were scored on Campbell attack errors. Chakirelis had a perfect four kills on four swings in the set.

Campbell evened the match with a 25-22 win in the second set. After making eight attack errors in the first set the Camels cut their mistakes to two in the second set, narrowly outhitting HPU .238 to .237.

Attack errors hurt HPU in the third set as the Panthers posted 11 kills and eight errors for a .077 attack percentage while Campbell hit .105. CU called a timeout with the score knotted 20-20. Breanna Holliday gave the Camels the lead after the break on a service error, her third of the night. An attack error by Heather Wilson tied the score again 21-21 before Campbell went on a 4-0 run to win the set. Three of Campbell's last four points were scored on HPU errors.

HPU evened the match and forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in set four. The frame was tied 22-22 when Heldt gave HPU the lead with her 16th kill of the match. Johnk brought up set point, evening Heldt with 16 kills. Heldt and Jamie McDonald blocked Annie Kobeski for the final point of the set.

Campbell jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the fifth set but HPU battled back to an 8-6 deficit with tough serving, Bell and Holliday had aces, and a kill by Johnk. Lindsey Coats hit the ball in to the set and Johnk put down another kill to knot the score 8-8. The teams stayed even until a 13-13 tied was broken by a Johnk service error. Marek won the match for Campbell with fourth kill of the night.

Chelsea Davis had a career-high 19 digs and HPU came up with 97 digs as a team. McDonald finished the night with eight kills and three blocks.

The Panthers have a week off before their next match on Oct. 28 at Gardner-Webb. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
