The High Point University volleyball team fell on the road to Coastal Carolina 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 14-25) Saturday at Kimbel Arena. Junior
Courtney Johnk led the team with 10 kills while
Kristin Heldt recorded nine kills.
"Coastal came out played consistently all match and we struggled from the first whistle," said head coach
Jason Oliver. "In the process of this season this was a weekend that will help us figure out what it means to compete every point. We are one step closer to that after this weekend."
Johnk also had two blocks and six digs in the loss while
Molly Barlow came up with 10 digs and
Michelle Chakirelis and
Caity Farus each chipped in five kills.
The Chanticleers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and the Panthers could not overcome that early deficit, dropping the set 25-22. HPU was down 24-19 in the frame and fought off three set points. Chakirelis had a kill and a block and
Chelsea Davis had a service ace before Lian Bernett won the set for Coastal Carolina with her fourth kill of the frame. CCU outhit High Point .280 to .185 in the first set. Chakirelis led the team with four kills and two blocks in the frame.
Errors hurt HPU late in the second set. The Panthers had a 23-22 lead on a kill by Davis before the freshman had a service error and Chakirelis hit a ball in to the antenna to give Coastal Carolina set point 23-24. Heldt put down a kill to tie the score at 24-24 but Sam Skryd and Erika Lightsey answered with kills for the Chanticleers to send CCU in to the locker rooms with a 2-0 lead.
Coastal Carolina rolled to a 25-14 win in the third set, forcing seven HPU hitting errors. The set was tied 10-10 before the Chants took over, outhitting HPU .2229 to .000 in the final frame.
The Panthers return home on Friday to host Liberty at the Millis Center at 7 p.m. It is a rematch of last year's Big South Championship game when HPU swept Liberty to earn its first-ever Big South title.
