Shay Shine scored a career-high 27 points to lift the High Point University men's basketball team to 64-60 overtime win over Presbyterian College Thursday in Clinton, S.C. Shine was a perfect 6-6 from three-point range, with two of them in overtime.

"Shay was huge, Xavier Martin was huge, Du'Vaughn Maxwell was huge off the bench, David Campbell was huge with his inbounding – I can just go down the line and talk about how everyone contributed," said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "We got defensive stops when we needed them. It was a great game, we haven't tasted a win in a while. We had three great days of practice leading up to this and it carried over into the game."

Shine added six rebounds and three assists in the 64-60 win, snapping HPU's eight-game losing streak. The Panthers improved to 6-11 (3-5 Big South) while the Blue Hose fell to 8-12 (2-6 Big South).

HPU scored first in overtime on a three by Shine but Presbyterian made back-to-back layups to take a 57-56 lead. HPU freshman Du'Vaughn Maxwell hit a pair of baskets from the paint to put HPU up 60-57, and the Panthers held it the rest of the way.

With HPU down four and 1:10 remaining in regulation, Shine drove the lane but lost the handle on the ball and was forced to shovel a pass out to freshman Xavier Martin. Martin drained a three to cut the Blue Hose lead to one, 52-51. The Panthers' defense came up big and forced a shot clock violation, but HPU couldn't score on the ensuing possession. Martin fouled Jake Troyli, who sank his second free throw to put the Blue Hose ahead 53-51.

With 10 seconds left, Shine collected a pass from Tehran Cox and hit a jumper from the right side, knotting the score at 53-53. Pierre Miller forced up a shot with Martin's hand in his face but it was short and HPU collected the rebound, sending the game to overtime.

Shine started the game by hitting his first three attempts from beyond ht arc, lifting HPU to an early 9-3 lead. The Blue Hose took the lead back at 10-9 on a jumper by Miller but it would be their final lead of the half. Martin scored the next five points, including a steal for a layup that turned into a three-point play. On the next Presbyterian possession, Cox stole the ball from Josh Johnson and converted the fast break layup. The Panthers led by as many as nine points in the first half.

Maxwell added 12 points and four rebounds in the game and Martin scored 11. Cox had eight points, six rebounds and three assists on the night.

For Presbyterian, Khalid Mutakabbir scored 15 points, Walt Allen had a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and Miller scored 13.

High Point University's next action will come at Winthrop for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C.
