Scott Rojo selected in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft

Forward Scott Rojo of the High Point University men's soccer team became the first HPU player ever drafted into the MLS when he was selected by Toronto FC in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft on Tuesday. Rojo was selected by the Reds with the 44th overall pick.

“The entire High Point soccer family is extremely excited for Scottie,” head coach Dustin Fonder said. “Scottie being drafted was the buzz around campus all day. It is a tremendous honor for him to be drafted and a wonderful opportunity for him to continue his career professionally. This is a new benchmark for High Point men's soccer and hopefully this will become a trend going forward.:

A three-time All-Big South honoree, Rojo led the nation in assists in 2010 with 17 in 20 games. He also scored four goals on the season to finish third on the team with 25 points. The Houston, Texas native's 29 career assists are an HPU Division I record and his 47 career points leave him third in High Point's Division I era. Rojo also led the PDL in assists last summer while playing for the Carolina Dynamo and was named to the 11-man All-Premier Development League team by vote of team management around the league.

“This is a dream come true for me,” Rojo said. “To be given the chance to show what I have Worked my whole life for is amazing. I am excited to be part of the preseason process and hopefully I can show enough to make the team.”

Rojo will report to Toronto to begin training camp on Jan. 23. The team is then scheduled to travel to Turkey before finishing its training camp in Orlando, Fla.
