A late rally by the High Point University women's basketball team fell just short as the Panthers fell to Coastal Carolina, 67-60, Saturday afternoon in Conway S.C. Sophomore Shamia Brown scored 19 points and had three steals for High Point.

"This was one of those days where we just weren't able to do things that we needed to do to win on the road," said head coach Tooey Loy. "Give a lot of credit to Coastal Carolina. They played better than I have seen them play all season. We didn't get many breaks, everytime I thought we were getting back into it we would get a tough break."

Down 10, 62-52, with less than four minutes left in the game, HPU went on an 8-1 run to trim the CCU lead to just three, 63-60, with a little over one minute in the contest. Brown junior Amy Dodd each scored four points for the Panthers in the late surge and freshman Erin Reynolds contributed with two steals on the defensive end.

High Point had a chance to tie the game with 25 seconds left after Coastal's Katie White missed a shot and junior Mackenzie Maier pulled down the rebound, but junior Jurica Hargraves missed a 15-footer from the left baseline and Coastal hit four of six free throws in the last 20 seconds to win 67-60.

The Panthers took the early lead in the game, jumping up by three, 8-5, five minutes into the game, with all eight points coming in the paint. The HPU defense troubled the Chants early as CCU opened the game shooting just 2-10 from the field.

Five straight points by Coastal on a three by Olivia Irick and a steal and fast-break layup by Sydnei Moss gave CCU a 16-15 lead with 11 minutes left and sparked a 14-2 run to put the Chanticleers up by eight, 25-17, with just under nine minutes left in the half.

The Coastal lead remained eight, 32-24 with 34 seconds left in the half when Reynolds connected on a spinning lay-up in the lane to make the halftime score 32-26.

Brown led the Panthers at the break with eight points while Irick and White each scored nine to lead all scorers for the Chanticleers.

After Coastal scored the first six points of the second half to extend its lead to 13, 39-26, Dodd connected on a layup on an inbounds play and then found Brown on the blocks for a layup to key a 10-0 run, pulling HPU to within three, 39-36 just under 15 minutes left in the game. Dodd and Brown combined for seven of the Panthers' 10 points.

CCU ended the run with six-straight points to push the lead back to nine, 45-36, before Dodd hit a straightaway three to trim the lead to six with 12:43 left in the game.

The Chanticleers outscored HPU 6-2 over the next four minutes to build its lead to 10 with just under nine minutes in the game before a three by junior LaTeisha Dean with 8:48 left made the score 51-44.

High Point continued to try and trim the Chanticleer lead over the next five minutes but two free throws by Moss gave Coastal a 62-52 advantage.

With the loss, HPU falls to 13-9 overall on the season and 6-3 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina improves to 13-8 overall and 4-5 in the Big South with the win.

Dodd joined Brown in double figures in scoring for the game with 14 points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds. Junior Frances Fields chipped in with eight points and a team-best six assists.

White scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for CCU. Sydnei Moss had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds to go along with six steals and four assists.

"We just need to regroup," Loy said. "We have got to make sure we are ready to go and that we play 40 good minutes of basketball. We can't let this linger, we have to put it behind us and move on and play a good basketball game on Monday."

The Panthers continue their current two-game road swing with a game against Charleston Southern on Monday at 7 p.m. High Point beat the Lady Buccaneers, 68-56 in the Millis Center earlier this season in both teams' Big South opener.
