BOX SCORE

The High Point University men's basketball team had four players score in double-figures, but a Charleston Southern run early in the second half led the Buccaneers to a 77-69 win over HPU on Friday at the Buccaneer Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C. Junior Shay Shine led HPU with 17 points.

"I'm proud of my guys, we fought hard, we didn't shoot the ball extremely well and missed some easy looks, but we just have to come back in 48 hours and be ready to play a really good Coastal Carolina team," said HPU head coach Scott Cherry. "Usually when you have three or four guys in double-figures you can get a win. We just need to eliminate the type of stretch they had early in the second half and regroup after giving up an easy basket.

High Point University fell to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Big South while Charleston Southern improved to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the Big South.

Behind Shine, HPU freshman Xavier Martin scored a season-high 15 points, including 13 in the second half. Corey Law scored 14 points on 7-for-8 field-goal shooting with a team-high nine rebounds and Tehran Cox scored 11 points. Shine also chipped in a game-high four assists.

Charleston Southern's Jamarco Warren led all scorers with 24 points. Kelvin Martin scored 14 with a game-high 15 rebounds and Sheldon Strickland was also in double-digits with 13 points.

After the Panthers opened the game with a 4-2 lead, Charleston Southern got a three-pointer from Warren and led the rest of the way. The Buccaneers extended it to nine (20-11) before Justin Cheek hit a trey, HPU's Martin hit two free throws and a CSU player was called for goaltending on a fastbreak layup by Cox to make it 20-18. Charleston Southern was able to get its lead up to 10 when Johathan Brooks hit a layup and the Buccaneers drained six straight free throws. Shine broke it up with a jumper and Law followed with a jumper from the paint to cut CSU's lead to 28-22. The Bucs extended the lead back to eight (34-26), before HPU closed the half on a 5-1 run, capped by a trey from Cox, to make it 35-31 at the break.

Charleston Southern netted the first two baskets of the second half before Law dunked it to make it 39-33. After a basket by CSU's Kenny Mitchell, Law grabbed an offensive board and scored again to make it 41-35. Barbour hit one of two free throw sand the next layup off a steal by Cox to make it 41-38.

After Law hit a jumper in the paint to make it 43-40, Charleston Southern went on a 16-5 run that saw Warren score 10 points to give CSU its largest lead of the game at 61-45. The Panthers cut that back to 10 (68-58) after Shine hit two free throws and Xavier Martin hit a three. After CSU's Brooks hit a jumper, Cox hit one to make it 70-60 with under three minutes remaining. HPU cut the lead to nine (73-64) on a layup by Martin. Warren hit three of four free throws to make it 76-64 before Martin completed a three-point play to make it 76-67. Law hit a jumper to finish the game, but the Panthers couldn't get it closer than eight.

The Panthers are back in action on Sunday when they play Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. in Conway, S.C. The Panthers and Chanticleers split a pair of games last season, with each team winning at home.
