Freshman Maddie Simpson dished out 52 assists, helping four HPU attackers reach double-digit kills in the High Point University Volleyball team's 3-1 win over Radford Tuesday night at the Millis Center. Julie Hershkowitz controlled the back row for the Panthers coming up with 36 digs in the 3-1 (24-26, 25-12, 25-20, 25-19) victory.

“It started in the back row with Julie digging everything,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “Julie's passes gave Maddie the ability to set anyone she wanted and Maddie did a great job distributing the ball. It was an all-around team effort and I am very proud of us for not giving up after the first set.”

Senior Stephanie Wallin hit .433 with 16 kills to lead HPU, while Megan Smith added 14 kills and Courtney Johnk and Audie Gonzalez each had 11. Freshman Michelle Chakirelis tallied eight kills for the night.

Radford took the first set, 26-24, fighting off two Panther set points before taking the frame. A kill by Johnk put the Panthers ahead 24-22 but the Highlanders score four straight points, to win the set 26-24. Radford's Carly Fleming had two kills during the run and Kiley Kent ended the set with a service ace.

High Point controlled the second set, hitting .406 as a team with 16 kills. In the 25-12 win HPU put down 16 kills, including five by Smith, while Radford only had five kills as a team. Simpson had 11 assists and six digs in the set.

Sets three or four were close battles with High Point pulling out the 25-20 and 25-19 wins. Wallin led the way with four kills in the third set, adding five more in the final frame. Hershkowitz combined for 21 kills in the final two sets.

Simpson added four aces, 13 digs and one block to her 52 assists and both Gonzalez and Smith finished with double-doubles. Gonzalez added 10 kills to her 11 kills and Smith had 13 digs to go with 14 kills.

Molly Barlow had 12 digs and three aces off the bench for HPU.

High Point improves to 15-12 (10-3 Big South Conference), while the Highlanders drop to 8-19 (2-10 Big South Conference).

The Panthers will play a pair of road games this weekend, at Presbyterian College Friday and Gardner-Webb on Saturday. Radford will play at Gardner-Webb on Friday.
