High Point University men's cross country team finished 12th at the NCAA Southeast Region Championship on Saturday at Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. Junior
Neal Darmody finished 34th and freshman
Patrick Crawford placed 36th to lead HPU.
"Our goal was to be in the top 10 so we fell short of that in a strong region," said HPU head coach

Neal Darmody and
Patrick Crawford ran well and were in position to be in the top 25. Patrick especially closed well, and
Jevin Monds had a good race in his final collegiate cross country meet."
Liberty's Sam Chelanga and Evans Kigen went 1-2 in the race and will advance to the NCAA Championship. William & Mary won the meet with 85 points followed by Duke (116), NC State (131), Richmond (158) and Louisville (176). The Panthers scored 361 for 12th, finishing close behind George Mason (345).
Darmody's 34th-place finish came with a time of 31:34.8 just ahead of Crawford in 36th with a time of 31:40.1. Crawford was the sixth freshman in the race. HPU senior
Jevin Monds placed 76th in 32:37.4.
Sophomore
Jacob Smith was the fourth Panther to cross the finish line, coming in 107th in a time of 33:12.5 and freshman
Jacob Roach rounded out HPU's scorers in 11th overall with a time of 33:17.1. Junior
Mike Ali finished 151st in a time of 34:06.2 and freshman
John Yankello placed 219th. Yankello was dealing with an illness going into the race.
The regional concludes High Point University's 2010 cross country season. High Point will open the indoor track & field season at the Orange and Purple Winter Classic at Clemson on Dec. 4, the site of the Big South Championship in February. That will be HPU's only December meet and the Panthers will resume in mid January.
