The High Point University volleyball team handed UNC Asheville a 3-0 loss on Saturday at the Millis Center. Senior
Stephanie Wallin hit .476 in the match with 11 kills to lead the Panthers to the 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) victory in front of 1,106 fans.
Wallin had 11 kills with only one error in the match, as well as three blocks and three digs. She was one of three HPU players to register double-digit kills.
Megan Smith had a match-high 14 kills and
Audie Gonzalez added 12. Freshman
Maddie Simpson posted 45 assists and senior
Julie Hershkowitz had a match-high 17 digs.
“Wallin had a phenomenal match for us,” said head coach
Jason Oliver. “She played very well but so do Audie, Megan, Julie and Maddie. It was a balanced game for us and every person on the court did their part.”
The Panthers led by as much as 11 in the first set, taking a 21-10 lead on a kill by Wallin. Asheville cut the lead to five points at 23-18, but the deficit was too much to overcome and HPU won the frame 25-20 on Smith's fifth kill of the set.
The second set was a much closer battle, with the score tied as late as 21-21. Gonzalez put down a kill to put HPU ahead, and two Bulldog attack errors extended HPU's lead to 24-22. Smith again had the final kill of the set, pulling out the 25-22 win for the Panthers.
Asheville led 15-14 in the third set but HPU tied the score with a kill by Wallin and took the lead on a block by Wallin and Gonzalez. The Panthers wouldn't give the lead up, winning the set 25-19.
The Panthers (8-10, 3-1 Big South) will host Gardner-Webb Friday at 7 p.m. Asheville will play at Presbyterian Tuesday at 7 p.m.
