BOX SCORE
The High Point University women's soccer team exploded for three goals in the second half at Big South preseason favorite Liberty on Saturday to pick up the 3-0 win over the Flames in Lynchburg, Va. Freshmen
Kelli Joline,
Becca Hemby and
Cary Ann Parrish all scored.
"Tonight was an excellent performance by our team,” head coach
Marty Beall said. “I was proud of how we competed for the full 90 minutes against a very good Liberty team. To come to their place and shut them out while scoring three goals, when they've only given up one goal at home all season, speaks volumes."
Joline put High Point up, 1-0, in the 52nd minute with her team-best sixth goal of the season. Joline received a pass from senior
Sara Rager in the right side of the penalty area and took one touch towards net before letting loose with a hard low shot into the net. The freshman has scored five of her six goals against Big South opponents this season.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the 63rd minute with a goal by Hemby. Rager lofted the ball into the box and Hemby connected with a shot to the far right side of the goal on her first touch. The score was Hemby's second of the season and the first since her game-winner against Francis Marion in the season opener. Rager's assist was her team-best sixth of the season.
The offensive barrage continued just 10 minutes later when Parrish connected for her first goal of the season to put High Point up 3-0 in the 72nd minute. Parrish took a pass from freshman
Brooke Lisson and scored on an open goal as Liberty's Ashley Nyholt was caught out of position.
In the opening 45, High Point earned the better of the attacking opportunities with eight shots, forcing four saves by Nyholt. Joline had two shots on frame in the opening period, but was unable to beat Nyholt.
The 3-0 win is High Point's biggest of the season and the largest since a 6-0 win over South Carolina State on Sept. 28, 2008.
With the win, HPU improves to 5-9-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the Big South. The Panthers are undefeated in their last three games with a record of 2-0-1 in that span. Liberty falls to 5-8-2 overall and 2-3-0 in the Big South.
High Point continues its three-game road trip on Friday, Oct. 22, when the team heads to Lexington, Va., to take on VMI. The Panthers won, 1-0, against the Keydets last season in Vert Stadium.
