The High Point University volleyball team fell to Davidson 3-0 (26-28, 23-25, 28-30) in the first match of High Point University Classic Saturday at the Millis Center. The Panthers kept the match close, forcing extra points in sets one and three. Junior outside hitter Megan Smith led the Panthers with 13 kills and 12 digs.

Davidson outhit HPU .344 to .205 in the first set with seven kills from junior outside hitter Sarabeth Peele. The Panthers took a 21-18 lead late in the set but struggled from the service line, committing seven service errors. The Bobcats capitalized on the errors tying the game at 23 and again at 26. Davidson got a kill from sophomore middle Madison Benedict to go up 27-26 and won the first set 28-26 after an attack error from Smith.

In the second set the Panthers fell behind early but battled to a 21-21 tie. It was again errors that hurt HPU, losing the set 25-23 on an error by sophomore setter Holly Fong.

The third set also took extra points to determine a winner. Despite six kills from Smith and four from freshman outside hitter Courtney Johnk the Panther lost the set 30-28 and the match. The Panthers jumped out to an early 7-4 lead but Davidson outhit the HPU .238 to .176 in the third set to get the match win.

Fong 33 assists in the match and senior captain Megan Kaminskas put up four blocks and seven kills.

The Panthers fall to 4-2 on the season. HPU will be back in action at 7 p.m. when they take on Charlotte in the last match of the day.
