The High Point University volleyball team battled hard with the Georgetown Hoyas but fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-21) to the Big East opponent Saturday in the final match of the UNC Greensboro tournament. The Hoyas finished the tournament 4-0 while the Panthers went 2-1 on the weekend. Freshman
Molly Barlow (Phoenix, Ariz., Seton Catholic) led all Panthers with six kills and junior captain
Julie Hershkowitz (Scottsdale, Ariz., Seton Catholic) had 11 digs in the match. Both were named to the UNC Greensboro All-Tournament team and Hershkowitz was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Libero.
The first set was a tight battle with teams trading the lead but always staying within two points of each other early in the set. The Panthers took a 16-15 lead on a block by juniors
Anna Lott (Lincoln, Neb., Lincoln Northeast) and
Stephanie Wallin (Plymouth, Minn., Robbinsdale Armstrong) but the Hoyas went on an 10-2 run to close out the frame and win the set 25-18. Barlow had two kills and four digs in the set.
The Panthers struggled to regain momentum in the second set, falling behind 14-6. Barlow and Lott got back-to-back kills to put the score at 14-8. The Panthers attempted another run down 22-12 with kills from Barlow and Wallin and a service ace from Hershkowitz to pull within eight at 23-15 but it was too late and the Hoyas took the second set 25-15. Barlow hit .375 in the frame and had four of HPU's nine kills.
After falling behind 8-6 in the third set the Panthers went on a 7-0 run, capitalizing on three Georgetown errors with kills from
Megan Smith (Bellbrook, Ohio, Bellbrook), Wallin and Lott. The Panthers capped the run with a service ace from Hershkowitz to take a 14-8 advantage. HPU kept the lead until the Hoyas battled back to a 21-20 advantage. HPU didn't let down but Georgetown was able to take the set 25-21 and get the match sweep.
