High Point Drops Coastal Carolina, 71-63

Box Score

LaTeisha Dean, Frances Fields and Shamia Brown recorded double-doubles to lead the High Point University women's basketball team past Coastal Carolina, 71-63 on Saturday afternoon at the Millis Athletic Center.

Dean posted 11 points and 12 rebounds, Fields tallied 11 points and 12 assists while Brown recorded 10 points and 12 rebounds. Andrea Tucker led all High Point (11-11, 7-2 BSC) scorers with 14 points while Mackenzie Maier put up 12 points.

For the Chanticleers (12-10, 4-5 BSC) Kate Jasinski tallied 18 points. Sydnei Moss added 15 points while Jessica Noll recorded 12.

Coastal got on the board quick to open the game, but that is the only time they would lead in the contest. The Panthers took the lead at 16:33 off a jumper from Brown. CCU kept the contest close over the next several minutes and a pair of free throws by Moss at the 12:25 mark tied the contest at 13 all. High Point went on a 15-4 run to go on top by 13 (30-17) with a jumper from Jurica Hargraves with 5:24 showing.

It was Chanticleers' turn as they held the Panthers scoreless over the next four minutes to pull within three, 30-27, off a 10-0 run bookended by three point shots from Jasinski and Moss. But the Panthers scored the last two baskets of the half to take a, 35-27 advantage into the break.

The Panthers continued their run into the second half and took their largest lead of the game, going up 17 (50-33) off a jumper from Maier at 13:15. Coastal would not back down though and went on a 17-9 run to cut the lead down to nine with just over six minutes remaining when a three pointer from Noll cut the score to 59-50. The Panthers took back a double digit lead and were on top by 11 at the four minute mark, but Coastal scored the next two baskets to close the gap to six with two and half minutes to go. HPU pulled back up by seven, but Coastal responded with a three point from Jasinski with 38 seconds left. That is as close as the Chanticleers would come however as HPU closed out the game, going 4-of-4 from the line.

High Point dominated inside, pulling down 54 rebounds to just 31 by Coastal. The Panthers also tallied 22 points in the paint and 18 second chance points to just 8 and 7, respectively by CCU.

The Panthers will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 9 when they host Charleston Southern. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
