Panthers Defeat Eagles, 73-62

Box Score

Four players scored in double figures as the High Point University women's basketball team defeated Winthrop, 73-62 on Saturday in Big South action at Millis Athletic Center.

HPU's (13-15, 9-6 Big South) Jurica Hargraves led all scorers with 18 points on 6-of-12 from the field including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Hargraves also went a perfect 2-of-2 from the line. Amy Dodd poured in 12 points, pulled down seven rebounds and dished out six assits. Shamia Brown added 14 points while Frances Fields had 10.

For the Eagles (12-14, 6-7 Big South) Ashley Fann had 17 points, Tiffany Rodd posted 16 points and Yvonne van Daalen tallied 10. Shanice Cole notched double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams got off to a slow start before the Panthers connected on five straight baskets to take an early eight point, 16-8 lead eight minutes into the contest of a three pointer by Hargraves. The Lady Eagles kept the game close down just five at the 7:12 mark, but the Panthers went on an 11-0 run, bookended by layups from Dodd, to their largest lead of the first half, up 16 (34-18) with just under five minutes to play. Winthrop responded though, going on a 16-6 run to cut the lead down to five just before halftime. The Panthers would get the ball back though and Fields hit a layup as time was winding down to give High Point the 42-34 advantage going into the break.

Coming out of the break Rodd drained a three pointer to put the Lady Eagles within five, but High Point answered with a 16-6 run to go on top, 58-43 midway through the second half. The Panthers maintained a double digit lead over the next four minutes, but Rodd would connect on another three at the 5:09 mark to close the gap to seven (62-55). That is as close as the Eagles would come though as the Panthers hit their next three baskets to extend the advantage back to 13 and secure the game.

Winthrop held a 43-33 advantage on the boards, but only tallied five second chance points. High Point forced 16 turnovers and scored 15 points off turnovers while only coughing the ball up 11 times.

The Panthers will be back in action on Monday, March 9 in their final game of the regular season when they welcome Liberty into the Millis Center. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
