Box Score

Behind a balanced attack, High Point handed Longwood an 81-69 loss on Monday night in the Panthers final non-conference game of the regular season.

HPU never trailed in the game and led by as many as 17 points in the first half to improve to 9-18 on the season. Ten different players scored for the Panthers with four reaching double digits. Freshman Nick Barbour led the team with 18 points including 16 in the second half while junior Eugene Harris added 17 off the bench. Junior Cruz Daniels finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds to record his second straight double-double and Jourdan Morris chipped in 10.

Longwood, who had won 8 of their last 10 games coming into Monday night's contest, slipped to 15-13 with the loss. The Lancers got 61 of their 69 points from a trio of players. Dana Smith and Ryan Bogan each had 21 followed by 19 from Antwan Carter while just two other players tallied points for LU.

"This was a good win for our young players," said HPU head coach Bart Lundy. "The important thing for this team right now is to get wins. We need to continue to build momentum. We have won four of our last six games with both our losses coming in the final possession. This group is starting to play well as we head into the end of February and that is what you try and get your team to do."

HPU scored the first four points and pushed their lead to 24-7 with 10:37 left in the first half. The Panthers broke things open on the strength of an 11-0 run that included five points from Harris and baskets from several other players. Over the next four minutes, Longwood trimmed the deficit to seven following back-to-back treys from Bogan, but Jacob Iati answered with his own triple for HPU and Harris scored two straight baskets as the Panthers pushed back in front by 14.

High Point closed the half strong and held a 37-28 lead at the break. The Panthers shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half while holding the Lancers to just 32 percent. Harris and Daniels combined for 17 of HPU's first half points.

The Panthers maintained a double-digit advantage through the first several minutes of the second half and led by 11, 47-36, following a three-pointer from Harris at 15:12. Longwood scored six points over the next minute to get to within five and then closed the gap to three points twice near the 12 minute mark. However, the Lancers would get no closer as High Point began to make clutch shots to extend and secure their lead.

HPU returns to Big South Conference action to conclude the regular season. The Panthers will visit league leader Radford on Wednesday night before hosting VMI on Saturday at 7 p.m. Lone High Point senior Melvin Crowder will be honored during a pre-game ceremony on Saturday.
