The High Point University volleyball team finished the 2009 regular season with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22) win at Charleston Southern. Sophomore setter Holly Fong (Sebastopol, Calif., El Molino) set a career high with 58 assists and junior Stephanie Wallin (Plymouth, Minn., Robbinsdale Armstrong) had a career-high 22 kills with a .341 attack percentage.

“I was really glad to see us play as a unit and not a group of individuals,” said head coach Jason Oliver. “We came out and made plays. We let down in the third and they made plays but we were able to play our game in the fourth set. It is good momentum going in to the conference tournament.”

High Point came out with energy in the first set, taking a 22-21 lead on back-to-back service aces from Megan Smith (Bellbrook, Ohio, Bellbrook). Wallin had three kills late in the set to lead HPU to the 25-23 set win. Megan Kaminskas (Flagstaff, Ariz., Flagstaff) and Wallin each had four kills in the second set as HPU took a 2-0 match advantage with a 25-20 win.

It took extra points but CSU topped High Point 27-25 in the third set. High Point tied the set 23-23 on a service ace from Breanna Holliday (Hendersonville, N.C., West Henderson). The Panthers took a 25-24 lead on a block by Anna Lott (Lincoln, Neb., Lincoln Northeast)and Courtney Johnk (Larkspur, Calif., Redwood) but Charleston Southern made the kills late in the set to win the set 27-25.

The Panthers were able to keep their composure and came back to win the fourth set 25-22 behind seven kills from Wallin and six from Smith.

Smith finished the game with 15 kills and 12 digs while Johnk put down 17 kills. Julie Hershkowitz (Scottsdale, Ariz., Seton Catholic) had 15 digs.

High Point finishes the season 17-16 (6-10). The Panthers will participate in the Big South Volleyball Tournament next weekend on the campus of Radford University. The quarterfinals will be Thursday, Nov. 19.
