High Point Outlasts Coastal Carolina, 67-66

Sophomore Jurica Hargraves scored 16 of her 19 points in the second half as High Point outlasted Coastal Carolina, 67-66 on Monday night in Kimbel Arena. The Panthers improve to 5-9 and 2-0 in the Big South as Coastal falls to 9-6 and 1-1 in League play.

Hargraves went 7-of-15 from the field and was 3-of-4 from behind the arc as she led all scorers. Andrea Tucker posted a career-high 16 points while Frances Fields tallied 11 points and eight assists. Mackenzie Maier had a team-high nine rebounds. High Point shot 50-percent from the field as a team.

For the Chants, Kendra Reynolds led four players in double figures with 17. She also pulled down a game-high 13 boards.  Sydnei Moss added 13 points while Devin Rivers and Amanda Stull had 11 and 10 respectively.

High Point and Coastal kept the opening minutes close, but the Chanticleers went on a late run to take a 14 point lead, 37-23, at the 4:44 mark off a layup form Katie White. The Panthers would not back down though and held the Chants scoreless for the rest of the half, going on a 13-0 run to close out the half with the final basket coming with one second left off a three pointer by Maier. CCU took a 37-36 lead into the break.

The Panthers continued their run into the second half and took their first lead since the opening minutes on top 43-37 off of three straight baskets from Hargraves. Coastal battled back though and took back the lead at 8:13 with a jumper from Kate Jasinski. The two teams battled back and forth in the final minutes with Coastal holding the largest lead just up four with 4:37 left to play. The remaining minutes featured three ties and three lead changes. The final tie came with 1:21 left to play, but HPU took the lead back for good with 57 seconds showing on the clock off a layup from Tucker.

High Point held the slight 32-28 advantage on the boards while Coastal forced 21 turnovers and giving the ball up just 15 times.

HPU will be back on the court on Saturday, Jan. 10 when it hosts Radford. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m. in the Millis Center.
