No. 2 High Point Drops No. 7 Radford, 3-0 to Advance to Semifinals for First Time

The High Point University volleyball team defeated Radford 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16) on Friday afternoon at the Justice Center to captures the program's first Big South Tournament win. HPU will play the winner of the Coastal Carolina -Charleston Southern match that will be held on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.


Leading the Panthers (26-6) was senior Lindsay Raus with 13 kills. Stephanie Wallin added 11 kills while Audie Gonzalez recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 10 kills and a match-high 17 digs. Kristina Taylor tallied 32 assists in the match.


For the Highlanders (9-19) Lexi Miller had nine kills. Lauren Clary finished with 11 digs. Setter Kiley Kent had 21 assists, seven digs and three blocks.

High Point led from start to finish. In the first set, HPU led 15-14, but went on a 5-0 run to go on top 20-14. The Highlanders were unable to get any closer than five for the rest of the set as a service ace from Tara Dyer ended the set.


In the second set, Julie Hershkowitz had two straight service aces to help trigger a 9-3 run to get the Panthers on top 12-6. The Highlanders closed the gap to three (23-20) late in the set off three kills from Miller. High Point responded with back-to-back kills from Wallin to give High Point the final points needed to take the set.


The third set was all High Point. With Hershkowitz serving, High Point scored 11 straight points to race to a 12-1 lead. The Panthers coasted to the victory to win the match and advance to the semifinal round.


"This is a historic win for High Point volleyball and we're very excited to be advancing to the semifinals of the tournament," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "I thought we did a good job of matching Radford's energy early in the match with our ball control. We got solid contributions from everyone and are delighted to get the victory."


High Point will await the outcome of the No. 3 Coastal Carolina verses No. 6 Charleston Southern match which will be played at 2:30 on Friday.
