Panthers set new single season record for ties

HPU posts 7th shutout of the season

Playing in their final road game of the 2008 regular season, the High Point University women's soccer team battled a tough Radford squad to a 0-0 tie in double overtime on Wednesday night at Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The draw moved the Panthers overall record to 7-4-6 while pushing their Big South mark to 3-2-2. It was the squad's seventh shutout of the year and also established a new single season record for ties. HPU finishes the year with an impressive 4-1-5 record on the road. Radford is now 8-1-5 (2-1-3 Big South) following the game.

"I am extremely proud of the effort from our team tonight," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "The whole team gave it their all tonight. This was a fantastic performance. Our team showed great character in battling against an outstanding Radford team."

The two squads battled through a tightly contested opening half before treating the fans in the second half to an aggressive flurry of shots. For the game, Radford held a slight 18-14 shot advantage with HPU sending six shots attempts on goal during the second half. Both teams tallied three shot attempts during the overtime periods.

HPU junior goalkeeper Marisa Abbott recorded a career-best 11 saves on the night in earning her fourth shutout this season and Panther program record 11th of her career. Radford's netminder Lisa Lubke finished the game with eight stops.

Freshman midfielder Laura Shupe paced the Panthers on offense with four shots including three on frame. RU's Ashley Johnson and McKenzie Vergara both totaled three shots on goal for the Highlanders.

High Point will have a week off from competition before hosting a pair of home games during the final week of the regular season. HPU welcomes Big South newcomer Gardner-Webb next Wednesday (Oct. 29) and then closes League play on Nov. 1 against Coastal Carolina. The Panthers are hosting this year's Big South Championship Tournament at Vert Stadium on Nov. 6-9.
