HPU Men's Soccer Falls 2-0 to UNCG

UNC-Greensboro used two second half goals to post a 2-0 victory over High Point in a very physical intra-Triad battle at UNCG Soccer Stadium.

After a slow paced first half in which both teams tried to posses the ball, UNCG finally cracked through when Nirav Kadam handled a missed cleared attempt by the HPU defense to beat goalie Michael Chesler on the near right post to score the game-winning goal in the 58th minute.  Three minutes later Chesler denied Matt Fox on another shot attempt by UNCG, but the rebound found the foot of Tim Masters who put in his team leading third goal.

The Panthers did not give up after giving up the pair of goals to the Spartans.  After the UNCG posted their second goal, High Point outshot them by a 10-0 margin, but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities.  Less than a minute after UNCG took the 2-0 lead, Karo Okiomah had goalie Nate Berry draped on his back and turnaround and fired a shot wide of the open net.  It was Okiomah's first substantial playing time in over a month after sustaining an injury.

With 20 minutes remaining in the game, Hilaire Babou almost headed home a goal off a Ryan Puppolo service into the box, but we denied on a Berry diving save.  Berry had another goal saving stop when he dove and stopped a header from Puppolo on a corner kick.

"Soccer is a cruel game in the fact that the score line is not indicative of the flow of the game," said head coach Dustin Fonder.  "Congratulations UNCG for getting the win, but I thought we had some great moments tonight that didn't conclude with finding the back of the net.  We already put this one in our rear view mirror as we get ready for Radford in a key conference match-up at home.  We are currently undefeated at home and I think it is because of our great home crowd.  We ask our fans to get behind us this Wednesday night at Vert Soccer Stadium."

HPU ended the game with a 15-11 shot advantage and 5-3 edge in corner kicks.  Both goalkeepers made six saves apiece, while Berry picked up the win for the Spartans.  The Panthers even their record on the season to 5-5-1 and return back to conference play with an important match-up with Radford Wednesday night at Vert Track and Soccer Stadium.  Kickoff is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
