Box Score The High Point University women's basketball team fell to Coastal Carolina, 66-57, on Saturday in Kimbel Arena. HPU falls to 16-10 (9-3 Big South) while CCU improves to 16-10 (7-5 Big South).
Senior guard Candyce Sellars had 17 points while sophomore Ayonna Thompson came off the bench to score 10.
Leading the Chanticleers was Alisha Dill with a game-high 26. Victoria Blanchard chipped in 12.
Both teams battled in the opening minutes for the lead before High Point went on a 7-0 run to take a six point lead at the 11:50 mark off a jumper from Ashlee Samuels. Coastal rallied with a 17-4 run to go up 28-21 with six minutes left with a lay-up from Dill. Erica Brockmyer shot a three to spark a Panther run to close the gap to two (32-30) going into the break.
Coming out of the break, a three-pointer from Leslie Cook gave the Panthers the lead. A three pointer from Dill at 18:17 gave Coastal the 37-36 lead which the Chanticleers held on to for the rest of the game. HPU would pull within two at 15:47 when Sellars connected for a lay-up. Coastal jumped out to a nine point lead (58-49) with 6:24 left. HPU would pull within four with just over five minutes left, but that is as close as the Panthers would get in the final minutes.
High Point had 24 points off the bench to Coastal's 18. Coastal shot 73.7-percent from the charity stripe while High Point shot just 40-percent.
The Panthers return to the court on Monday, Feb. 26 when they travel to Charleston Southern. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
