High Point Drops Overtime Thriller at Presbyterian

HPU outshoots PC 24-13

The High Point women's soccer team surrendered a goal in the first overtime allowing future Big South opponent Presbyterian College to escape with a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

The Panthers (8-6-2) possessed the ball for most of the game earning a 24-13 edge in shot attempts and a 10-2 advantage in corner kick tries. Presbyterian improved to 5-7-1 this season with the victory.

The Blue Hose capitalized on a counter attack in the fourth minute of the first extra session (93:36) to score the game winner. Melanie Martin tracked down a ball played to space down the right hand sideline and then threaded a ball across the goal mouth where she found a streaking Lytle Cannon. Cannon one-timed a toe poke just in front of an HPU defender and just out of the reach of a diving Panther goalkeeper.

For the game, senior Jen Evans led the Panther offense with eight shot attempts including three shots on goal. Sophomore Laura Eldridge also finished the contest with three shots on goal. The Panthers had several scoring chances in regulation just miss as three shots found the crossbar or goalposts.

HPU keeper Marisa Abbott recorded four saves while PC netminder Erin Sinkuler tallied 14 saves in earning the shutout.

High Point concludes their regular season schedule this week with games at Charleston Southern on Wednesday and then at Winthrop on Saturday.
