Radford men's soccer scored two late goals, to slip past High Point 2-1 in double overtime Tuesday night at Cupp Stadium.
Radford (7-5-0, 2-1-0 Big South) put the offensive pressure on early and was in a perfect position to take a one-goal lead in the first half, but senior Davorin Husadzinovic's hard rising shot ricocheted off of the cross bar straight down to High Point junior keeper Adam Ross. The Panthers then put the pressure on Radford, forcing five first half corner kicks to Radford's one, but none resulted in a goal.
High Point (5-8-1, 1-2-0 Big South) broke the scoreless tie just seven minutes into the second half when sophomore Hilaire Babou's pass across the box stopped at the feet of junior Chris Shrum who one-timed a hard shot well out of the reach of Radford junior keeper Zach Roszel to give HPU a 1-0 advantage.
Husadzinovic scored the unassisted equalizer at 81:02 corralling the ball after a defensive deflection in the box and flicked it into the left corner, tying the game.
The game-winning goal came halfway through the second sudden-death overtime. Radford sophomore Daryn Patricio launched a corner kick into the box, where it bounced high and deflected off of a High Point player. The loose ball just barely rolled across the goal line as a HPU defender tried to clear it, but it was ruled to have been in goal.
High Point made an offensive push in the final minute of the game and Shrum tried to blast the ball past Roszel with just 44 seconds left in regulation, but Roszel came up with a brilliant leaping save to send the game to overtime.
Radford outshot HPU 18-10, but the Panthers held the corner kick advantage at 6-5. Both keepers made six saves.
The Panthers will be back in action one week from today when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face UNC. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Fetzer Field.
