Box Score

The High Point University volleyball team closed out the home portion of its 2006 schedule on Tuesday night with an impressive 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-22) sweep over Triad-rival North Carolina A&T in the Millis Athletic Center.

The victory upped the Panthers' season tally to 10-20, marking the third consecutive season that HPU has amassed double-digit victories. The win also allowed High Point to finish 6-6 on their home floor this season. With the loss, A&T slips to 16-11 this year.

Jamie Kaufman and Audie Gonzalez both finished with double-doubles on the night to lead the Panthers. Kaufman, who now has 19 double-doubles this season, recorded a team-best 13 kills along with 12 digs. Gonzalez added 11 kills and 11 digs with libero Lauren Hatch chipping in 14 digs to lead the HPU backline. Senior Sabrina Wahid tallied three blocks to pace the Panther front row in her final home match.

Arlene Mitchell had a 14 kill-18 dig double-double to lead the Aggies on Tuesday night with Lauren Walker contributing 16 digs for a scrappy A&T defense. Avignon Williams led all players with five blocks on the night.

"At this point in the season, wins are always important and great to get," said HPU head coach Chad Esposito. "It is sometimes tough to get focused for a non-conference match this late in the season, but I was proud of our effort tonight. It was an up-and-down match for us but I thought our defense and serve receive really allowed us to get the victory. Hopefully, we can carry this winning momentum into our regular season finale at Winthrop and the upcoming Big South Tournament."

High Point broke open a tightly contested opening game with a 9-2 surge midway through the frame. The Aggies fought back to close to within four points (24-20), but HPU scored five straight points on freshman Tara Dyer's serve and were able to close out the game.

A&T held a brief advantage early in the second stanza before HPU rallied to tie the score at 13. High Point began to slowly open up a margin leading by as many as five points (23-18), but had to fight off a hard charging Aggie squad down the stretch to earn the three-point victory.

The two squads traded the lead four times and were tied eight times in the third game. The Panthers eventually opened up a six-point cushion (20-14) and played strong sideout volleyball en route to the three-game sweep. High Point defeated North Carolina A&T in both meetings this season.

HPU travels to Big South leading Winthrop on Friday for the team's final regular season match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. on Friday in Rock Hill, S.C. Following the regular season finale, High Point, who has already locked up the No. 5 seed for the Big South Tournament, will hit the road to open tournament play on Tuesday.
