No. 1 Winthrop's Daniel Revivo posted a hat-trick to lift the Eagles to a 3-0 win over No. 6 High Point in the finals of the 2006 Big South Men's Soccer Tournament Sunday afternoon at Cupp Stadium on the campus of Radford University. With the win, Winthrop (15-3-3) earns the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will find out who it will play on Monday, Nov. 6.
Winthrop got on the board first in the 42nd minute of the first half. Revivo put the ball in the back of the net on a header from eight yards out off of a Dustin Bybee and Stephen Nsereko assist to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
Winthrop posted its second goal at the 79th minute in regulation. Oliver Denal found a streaking Revivo who beat High Point keeper Adam Ross one-on-one to put the Eagles up, 2-0.
A minute later, Revivo picked up his third goal of the game. David Kenga found an open Revivo behind the High Point defense who tucked the ball into the open net to give Winthrop the 3-0 win.
Winthrop had the edge in shots with 16, while the Eagle defense held HPU to just two shots. Winthrop goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich registered two saves, while Panther netter Ross recorded four saves.
High Point ends the season at 6-10-4.
QUOTES
Winthrop Coach Rich Posipanko
"It was a hard fought game until the end. You have to give High Point a lot of credit. We saw them play their first games back in August and they have made tremendous improvement from that time. Coach Broadley and his players should be congratulated for the season they had and getting to the championship with a legitimate chance to win."
High Point Coach Peter Broadley
"Congratulations to Winthrop. I'm sure they will be fantastic representatives of the conference. I am very proud of our team even though we came up a bit short I am very proud of all we have accomplished this season. I think that we have made other teams in the conference realize that we will be a force in the future which is very encouraging with such a young team."
