Box Score Davidson shot 54.7-percent from the field to defeat High Point, 81-63 tonight in women's basketball action. The Panthers fall to 2-3 on the season while the Wildcats improve to 5-2.
Senior Candyce Sellars led the Panthers, recording a double-double with 20 points and a career-record setting 10 rebounds. Sophomore Ayonna Thompson also had a career night with 20 points while Leslie Cook added 13.
The Wildcats' starting five all reached double figures in tonight's victory. Katie Hamilton led with 14 while Danielle Hemerka chipped in 13. Jessica Mitchell and Brynn Kelly both had 12 and Tia Washington rounded out the double figure scoring with 10.
Davidson jumped out early, going up 13-0 before the Panthers got on the board off a pair of made free throws from Cook at 15:19. The Panthers attempted to battle back with a 13-6 run to pull within six (19-13) with 10:34 left in half off a three pointer from Thompson. But the Wildcats responded with a 21-7 run highlighted by back-to-back three pointers by Hamilton and Mitchell to take a 20 point lead (40-20) at 3:48. Cook hit two three pointers to close out the half and send the Panthers into the break down by 16 (29-45).
The Wildcats started the second half much like the first, going on a 9-0 run. Davidson controlled the second half, shooting 60-percent from the field and reaching their largest lead of the game, 58-31. The Panthers rallied late to cut the Wildcat advantage to 14 with just over a minute remaining on a lay-up from Cook, but it was too late for the Panthers.
"They are a very good team," said High Point head coach Tooey Loy. "and we didn't play very well tonight. Our defense did not play very well and Davidson was very solid on the defensive side."
Davidson scored 42 points in the paint to HPU's 12. The Panthers held the advantage on the boards, out rebounding the Wildcats, 37-34. High Point also had solid production off the bench with 27 points.
The Panthers will return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 6 when they face former Big South rival Elon. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Elon.
