High Point Falls to Wake Forest, 62-48

The High Point University women's basketball team fell to Wake Forest, 62-48, tonight at Lawrence Joel Veteran's Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C. HPU drops to 0-2 on the season while WFU improves to 2-2.

Leading the Panthers in scoring was senior Candyce Sellars with 12 points. Senior Katie Ralls added 11. Ralls also led the team in rebounding with six.

The Demon Deacons had three players in double figures with Yolanda Lavender leading the way with 14. Alex Tchangoue had a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards. While Mekia Valentine rounded out the double figure scoring with 10.

High Point and Wake Forest traded baskets through the first 13 minutes of the game before Wake's Melissa Washington sparked a short Demon Deacon run to give Wake a nine point advantage with just over a minute to play in the half. High Point cut the lead to seven in the final minute of the first off a lay-up from Ralls, but Wake's Tchangoue responded to give the Deacons the nine point advantage going into the break.

Coming out of the intermission Wake scored the first basket of the half to take the 11 point advantage.  The Panthers kept it close to pull within eight off a made free throw by Amber Manuel at the 10 minute mark (45-37). The Deacons responded a minute later with a three pointer from Yolanda Lavender to take the 11 point advantage. Manuel responded on the next possession with a lay-up to pull again to within nine (48-39). The game remained close until another three pointer from Lavender at 7:47 set up a Wake Forest run over the minutes of the game to keep the Panthers down by double-digits.

High Point played solid defense causing 23 Wake Forest turnovers. Wake dominated on the boards pulling down 50 rebounds to HPU's 32.

The Panthers will be back in action on Monday, Nov. 17 for their home opener against UNC Wilmington. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Millis Athletic Center on the campus of High Point University.
