High Point Drops Birmingham-Southern, 1-0

Freshman Hilaire Babou scores for the Panthers.

The High Point University men's soccer team defeated Big South foe Birmingham-Southern, 1-0 on Saturday at Richard Vert Track and Soccer Stadium.

HPU (3-6-3, 2-1-0 Big South) senior Chris Archer had a well placed direct kick that found the foot of freshman Hilaire Babou inside the box who easily tapped the ball into the goal in the 62nd minute of play for the lone goal of the game.

BSC (4-7-1, 1-1-1) had seven shots in the first half but High Point's solid defense helped keep the game tied at 0-0 going into the half. At the start of the second half both teams came out strong and Birmingham had several chances to score the equalizing goal in the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

"After the great game against Carolina, I expected the team to play a bit down today after such a high," said HPU head coach Peter Broadley. "But it was good to see that we were able to refocus and get the win today."

Birmingham held the advantage in shots with 11-4. HPU goalkeeper Adam Ross had two saves and earned the win while BSC's keeper, Joseph Anthony had zero saves.

"Birmingham out played us at times," Broadley said. "They are a strong team and play very well."

High Point will return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 10 when it hosts UNC Asheville. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Richard Vert Track and Soccer Stadium.
