The High Point University men's soccer team fell to UNC Greensboro tonight, 1-0 at UNCG Soccer Stadium. UNCG improves to 10-5-1 while the Panthers fall to 4-7-3.
In the first half defense was strong on both sides as HPU and UNCG played to 0-0 tie going into the break. The Panthers had several chances in the first half with shots by Chris Archer, Dan Haywood, Josh Windley, and Cole Atkins.
"Overall good team performance," said HPU head coach Peter Broadley. "We had great defensive play from the back four. I though both goalkeepers did very well for us tonight."
Both teams came aggressively out of the intermission. Archer was able to get off two shots in the first two minutes of the half. In the 77th minute Scott Jones connected with the back of the net from 25 yards out to give the Spartans the game winning goal.
"This will be a game that will help make us stronger against our conference opponents. I feel that we have once again proven that we can play with some of the best teams in the south region. We have continued to work and improve throughout the season."
Greensboro led in the shots category 18-9. HPU goalkeepers Adam Ross and Daniel Clark combined for six saves while UNCG keeper Nate Berry had two.
The Panthers will return to the field on Tuesday, Oct. 17 when they travel to Lynchburg to face Big South rival, Liberty. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
