High Point Falls to #25 Virginia Tech

The High Point University women's basketball team fell to #25 Virginia Tech, 91-52 tonight in Blacksburg. HPU falls to 9-4 on the season while the Hokies improve to 13-1.

 

Leading the Panthers was senior Katie O'Dell with 19 points including seven-of-12 from the field and three-of-four from three point range. Junior Leslie Cook added 10.

 

For the Hokies Kerri Gardin was the leading scorer with 15 points. Dawn Chriss added 13 while Carrie Mason chipped in 11.

 

Virginia Tech got on the board first when Gardin hit a lay-up at the 18:03 mark, but the Panthers quickly responded with a three pointer from O'Dell. The first 10 minutes of the game continued to be back and forth until Tech opened it up, going on a 25-12 run over the second part of the half.

 

The Hokies took a 42-24 lead into the half.

 

The second half continued to be the same with the Hokies outscoring the Panthers 49-28.

 

On the boards Virginia Tech out-rebounded HPU 48-29 with Nare Diawara leading all rebounders with 13. For the Panthers O'Dell and senior Sarah Haak had five each.

 

Defensively the Panthers caused 19 turnovers to the Hokies 18 and stole the ball seven times.

 

The Panthers will open the Big South conference season in their next game on Jan. 14 at UNC Asheville. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
