Last Second Shot Sends HPU Past UNCA, 73-70

Junior Candyce Sellars hit a three pointer with less than one second remaining in the game to seal the 73-70 High Point victory over UNC Asheville today in the Justice Center on the campus of UNCA.

 

Leslie Cook had a season high 17 points to lead the Panthers in scoring, while Sellars added 15. Raven Truslow and Katie Ralls were also in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively.

 

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Kristal Hood who posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Amanda Elder had 20 to lead all scorers.

 

In the first half the Panthers and Bulldogs battled back and forth throughout the opening 20 minutes, with 11 lead changes and eight ties. The game was tied going into the final ten seconds, but a last second jumper by Barton allowed the Bulldogs to take a 35-33 advantage into the intermission.

 

Coming out of the break Cook hit a three at the 19 minute mark to put the Panthers ahead by one, but the Bulldogs would respond with a jumper from Elder. The game continued to be a back and forth battle throughout the second half (11 lead changes, eight ties) with Asheville holding the largest lead, 56-50.

 

Going into the final 10 seconds the game was tied at 70. The Bulldogs had the ball and were poised for the victory, but a turnover by the Bulldogs gave the Panthers the ball with just over five second remaining. Sellars drove the ball down the court and put up the three to give High Point the win.

 

The Panthers shot 94-percent from the line, going 16 of 17.

 

HPU will return to action on Monday in Birmingham when the Panthers face off with Birmingham-Southern. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. central (8:00 est).
