Panthers Play Campbell to 2-2 Tie

The High Point University men's soccer team battled Campbell University to a 2-2 tie on Saturday night at Albion Millis Stadium.

Freshman Dan Haywood was the catalyst for the Panther men. Scoring in the 49th minute, Haywood caught the Camel's goalkeeper, Aaron Johnson, out of position and scored early in the second half to put the Panthers up 1-0.

Campbell (3-1-1) answered the HPU (0-4-1) goal with one of their own at the 60 minute mark when Sonny Guadarrama maneuvered around Panther goalkeeper, Adam Ross, to tie the game at one each.

Haywood was again on target in the 79th minute when he scored off of an assist from Cole Atkins to put the Panthers up 2-1 late in the game. The Panthers were unable to keep the lead in the 88th minute when Campbell again answered with an unassisted goal by Willy Guadarrama.

"I am pleased that we were able to put together, not 90, but 110 solid minutes of Division-I soccer," said High Point head coach Peter Broadley. "The offense was really together tonight. The defense and offense were in sync. Congratulations should go out to the whole team. They have been working really hard in practice and tonight it showed."

With Haywood's two goals tonight, he has three on the season.

"Tonight's game is something that we can build on as we progress through the rest of the season," Broadley said.

Next up for the Panthers is a home match with Big South Conference opponent Liberty. Kick-off for that game is set for 7 p.m. at Albion Millis Stadium.
