Box Score Charlena Martin tossed in 24 points and added five rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead High Point to a 75-61 win over Radford Wednesday night in Big South Conference women's basketball action in the Millis Center.
The Panthers (9-11, 4-3 Big South) pulled into a three-way tie for third place in the League with the Highlanders (10-10, 4-3) and Charleston Southern.
Martin led a pack of four HPU players in double-figures, including Katie O'Dell (15 points), Candyce Sellars (11 points) and Raven Truslow (10 points).
Taryn Causey paced the Highlanders with 15 points, six boards and five assists. Corrie Fertitta chipped in 14 points and Shavon Earp added 13 points for Radford.
High Point shot 59 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes en route to a 43-29 halftime advantage. The Panthers used a 13-2 run late in the half to turn a slim 21-19 edge into a 34-21 advantage. Martin had 16 of her 21 points in the first half.
The Panthers led by as many as 18 points after halftime (at 53-35 following a three-pointer by Katie Ralls with 16:43 to play). The Highlanders did mount a comeback to pull within eight points at 59-51 on a layup by Causey at the 8:47 mark.
But O'Dell and Emily Mills scored to push High Point's lead back to 13 points (64-51), and the Highs wouldn't get within nine points the rest of the way.
The Panthers held a 37-32 edge on the boards and hit eight of their 14 three-point attempts (57 percent) while shooting 52 percent from the floor. Radford shot 39 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range (5-of-15).
HPU hosts Charleston Southern on Saturday (7:00 pm) in the second game of a doubleheader with the Panther men (who play Coastal Carolina at 3:30 pm). Radford visits Birmingham-Southern at 3:00 pm Saturday.
