Box Score Katie O'Dell tossed in 21 points, Charlena Martin had 14 points and Raven Truslow added 11 points to help High Point pull away for a 61-52 win over Coastal Carolina Tuesday night in Big South Conference women's basketball action in the Millis Center.
The Panthers won their third-straight game and improved to 11-11 and 6-3 in Big South play, while the Lady Chants fell to 7-13 (3-6 in the Conference).
High Point also moved into sole possession of second place in the Big South after UNC Asheville (5-4) lost in overtime at Radford, 79-69.
Coastal got a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) from Kim Turner and 16 points from Alisha Dill, but could not overcome 29 turnovers. The Lady Chants out-shot the Panthers 41 percent to 37 percent and out-rebounded HPU by a 44-35 count.
High Point led by eight points on two occasions in the first half, including a 25-17 cushion following a layup by Truslow with 7:02 left in the opening period. Coastal never led in the first half, but got a layup by Dill and a jumper by Turner in the closing seconds to pull even at halftime, 31-31.
The Lady Chants scored six of the first eight points of the second half to lead 37-33, and built a five-point cushion (46-41) when Jasmine Tyler converted a bucket with 11:21 to play. But High Point stormed back with a 5-0 run to knot the score at 46-46 on a three-pointer by Martin.
The lead changed hands five times in the second half. Coastal held its final edge of the game at 50-49 when Turner drained a jumper with 4:24 to go.
On the ensuing possession, High Point's Emily Mills was fouled and missed both free throws. Coastal pulled down the board but Candyce Sellars stole the ball and laid it up to put the Panthers ahead 51-50. High Point would not trail again.
The Panthers outscored Coastal 7-0 in the final 2:13, and improved to 8-1 at home this season.
Dill, Demaria Young and Courtney Brown pulled down seven rebounds each for the Lady Chants. Katie Ralls tallied a team-high seven rebounds for HPU, which got five assists, four steals and three blocks from Sellars.
HPU hits the road Saturday at UNC Asheville in a crucial Big South contest. Tip-off between the Panthers and Bulldogs is set for 2:00 pm in the Justice Center.
Coastal Carolina hosts Radford Saturday at 2:00 pm.
