Men's Soccer

Appalachian Downs High Point, 4-1

Appalachian State downed High Point today in men's soccer action, 4-1. The Mountaineers improve to 5-5-1 on the season while the Panthers fall to 0-7-3.

High Point's Cole Atkins prevented the shut-out when he scored in the 60th minute. Atkins collected a Chris Archer pass from midfield and snaked a low ball past the ASU keeper. The goal makes Atkins' third of the season and Archer's second assist.

"With Cole's goal we were starting to get back into the game, only being down 2-1," said High Point University head coach Peter Broadley. "We actually played very well, but unfortunately some defensive errors at key points in the game allowed them to score and insure their win."

Despite the fact that Appalachian held just a 14-13 advantage in shots, ASU controlled much of the match and limited High Point to just three legitimate scoring opportunities. ASU was also awarded six corner kicks to High Point's one.

Appalachian netted its first tally in the 10th minute as Todd Topolka kicked a deflected save into the open far side off of an assist from Tate Parrish.

Parrish would add his own goal in the 31st minute as he took the feed from Cameron McCarthy and dribbled through the defense for the breakaway goal. The Mountaineers knocked in two insurance goals as Happy Hall scored in the 70th minute followed by a goal from J.T. LaBruyere in the 71st.

Adam Ross stopped three shots for High Point. While ASU's Alec Dufty made two stops in goal.

High Point will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at home against Coastal Carolina. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Albion Millis Stadium.
