The High Point women's soccer team suffered a disappointing 2-0 loss to Birmingham-Southern on Saturday night in the regular season finale for both squads.
The Panthers, who honored their trio of seniors – Courtney Noel, Wendy Williams and Ryan Hays – prior to the match, were looking to gain a share of the Big South Conference regular season but came up just short and finish the regular season 10-6-1 overall and 5-3-0 in the Big South. The win moves Birmingham-Southern to 8-10-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league play.
High Point had early chances to grab a lead recording a 7-3 edge in shot attempts during the opening half. However, it was BSC making the most of their opportunities scoring on two of their three tries in the first 45 minutes of play.
Julie Andra put the black and gold Panthers in front at 10:24, when she found herself one-on-one with HPU keeper Erica Brockmyer about 10 yards out and put the shot passed her for the score. Brittney Jones added an insurance goal for BSC at 23:14 by beating an HPU defender at the top of the box and pushing a ball past a charging Brockmyer.
HPU continued to pressure in the offensive end in the second half earning a 6-2 edge in shot attempts but the Birmingham-Southern goalkeeper tandem of Tina Ross and Andria Gray were up to the challenge recording four saves en route to handing High Point just their third shutout this year.
"We had some quality scoring chances in the first half," said HPU head coach Michelle Rayner. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to convert and that proved costly. It is disappointing because we held our own destiny in our hands and let a great chance slip away. We need to regroup, get back to work and turn our focus toward making a run at the Big South Tournament."
For the match, High Point out-shot Birmingham 13-5 and also earned a 5-2 edge in corner kick tries. Reine DeLaat led the way for HPU with four attempts.
High Point next plays at the Big South Conference Tournament next week in Rock Hill, S.C. HPU will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed at the event depending on the outcome of the Coastal Carolina-Liberty on Saturday night. Competition at the Big South Championship begins on Thursday, Nov. 3.
