Despite a hard fought effort by High Point, No. 10 UNC proved to be too much for the young squad as they downed HPU, 2-0, tonight in men's soccer action.
The Panthers were able to hold off the Tar Heels throughout the first half, going into halftime tied at nil.
"Of course we are disappointed in another loss," High Point University head coach Peter Broadley said. "But I thought that this was arguably our best performance all season. It was a very good team performance tonight."
Carolina broke the tie in the 53rd minute when Corey Ashe attempted a shot that was blocked by an HPU defender. Brian Shriver caught the deflection and found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The second UNC goal came at the 57:37 mark when Ashe found HPU goalkeeper Adam Ross out of the box for the easy score. Ashe was assisted by Dax McCarty.
"Carolina took two very nice goals tonight," said Broadley. "I was impressed with our young players' ability to play with the number 10 team in the nation. We didn't create many opportunities to score, but we matched up well in other categories."
During his final home appearance, senior Mark Gilbert had the lone shot on goal for the Panthers. The Heels out shot HPU 20-3. Gilbert alongside of teammate Patrick Althoff celebrated senior night tonight at Albion Millis Stadium.
"Our two seniors contributed a lot tonight in a game that they will always remember," Broadley said. "I am proud of their efforts throughout their years here at HPU."
Ross had four saves in the contest while UNC goalkeeper Justin Hughes had one.
The Panthers will be on the road for the remainder of the season. Their next game is Saturday, Oct. 29 at Birmingham-Southern. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
