Women's Basketball Falls To Charleston Southern, 53-50

Keena Wicker scored 27 points to lead the Lady Bucs past High Point's women's basketball team (53-50) in Big South Conference action on Saturday in Charleston, S.C.

Katie O'Dell, Raven Truslow, and Charlena Martin scored 11 points each for the Panthers. O'Dell also collected a career-high 15 rebounds to notch her sixth double-double of the season, while Truslow tallied a career-high seven steals.

HPU (6-9, 1-1 Big South) suffered its first Conference loss of the season, while Charleston Southern (6-9, 1-2 Big South) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Wicker scored the final four points of the game and also tallied seven rebounds for CSU. LaKeshia Bryant added 10 points and Deborah Cherry pulled down 10 boards for the Lady Bucs. 

The Panthers led for most of the first half until CSU rallied from a 10-point deficit, closing the half with an 11-0 run for a 27-26 halftime lead. 

HPU would open the second half with a 10-2 run to take a 36-29 advantage with 15:33 remaining in the game.

After CSU cut the lead to two at 36-34, High Point again opened up a seven-point advantage at 41-34 with 12:57 left in the contest. CSU again rallied as Wicker sparked a 9-0 run to give the Lady Bucs a 43-41 lead with 10:19 left.

With the game tied at 45 at the 8:36 mark, both teams went cold from the field for nearly five minutes. Wicker gave CSU a 47-45 lead with 3:43 remaining and High Point answered with a basket by Martin with 3:19 remaining.

Tied at 49, Truslow hit one of two free throws for a 50-49 HPU lead with 1:22 to play. Wicker gave CSU a 51-50 lead with a soft jumper with 57 seconds remaining. High Point turned the ball over on a charge by Ralls with 40 seconds left. CSU ran the shot clock down almost to the end before Bryant found Wicker wide open for a layup as the shot clock expired for a 53-50 lead with eight seconds left.

A desperation three-point attempt by Candyce Sellars at the buzzer fell short and the Lady Bucs celebrated.

High Point continues Conference play on Monday with a visit to Coastal Carolina. Tip-off at Kimbel Arena is set for 7:00 pm.
