Mark Wilson tossed in 21 points and High Point forced 25 Coastal Carolina turnovers to improve to 4-1 in Big South Conference play with a 79-64 victory over the homestanding Chanticleers Monday night at Kimbel Arena in Conway.
Zione White scored 14 points and Jerry Echenique added 11 points for the Panthers (9-9, 4-1 Big South). CCU fell to 5-12 on the season and 2-3 in the Big South. Titus Byrd contributed seven assists for the Panthers.
High Point, which has won six of its last seven contests, held the second-best three-point shooting team in the Big South to just 4-of-20 behind the arc.
The Panthers swiped 13 steals. Danny Gathings (seven points) and Patrick Hilliman tallied three apiece.
Coastal got 18 points from Pele Paelay and a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) from Adrian Gross.
Trailing 16-10, Coastal used a 13-0 run to jump out in front 23-16. CCU freshman John Burley entered the game having scored just one point the entire season, but had six in the run -- including a three-pointer at the 7:53 mark.
High Point rallied to get back even at 25-25 following a pair of Hilliman free throws with 4:23 left in the half, and following a layup by CCU's Colin Stevens on the ensuing trip downcourt, the Panthers kept the Chants off the board for the final 3:57 before halftime. HPU scored the final 13 points of the half and closed the stanza on a 22-4 run. Wilson scored the last eight points of the frame on a tip-in and a pair of threes to send the Panthers to the locker room with a 38-27 lead.
HPU shot 48 percent from the floor in the first half, getting 14 points from Wilson in the process.
The Panthers led by as many as 13 points (43-30) following a trey by White at the 18:38 mark before Coastal went on a 6-0 run to get within 43-36.
But HPU scored 13 of the next 17 points to build its biggest lead of the night (16 points) at 56-40. Akeem Scott capped the run with an old-fashioned three-point play and then two more free throws with 11:08 left. The Chants wouldn't get within 11 points the rest of the way.
High Point shot 52 percent from the field and limited Coastal to 36 percent. The Panthers fired at a 60 percent clip from three-point range. CCU held a slim 36-35 edge on the boards.
HPU travels to Radford Saturday night in the finale of a three-game road swing. Tip-off between the Panthers and Highlanders is set for 7:00 pm at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
