Volleyball Drops Season Opener At North Carolina

High Point freshman Jamie Kaufman recorded a match-high 10 kills, but host North Carolina used a balanced attack to claim the first-ever meeting between the teams with a 3-0 victory over the Panthers Wednesday evening in Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill.

The Tar Heels notched the victory by a linescore of 30-16, 30-14, 30-18.

Lindsey Pickens added eight kills kills for the Panthers.

The Panthers took the first point of the match, but would not lead again in game one. HPU did close to within six points at 17-11, but Carolina's Katie Wright delivered a timely kill to set off a run of four straight UNC points, and the Tar Heels took the game, 30-16.

Following a 30-14 UNC win in game two, High Point played its best volleyball in game three, when the teams traded points for the better part of the game. The Panthers were within 11-10 before the Tar Heels rattled off 11 of the next 14 points to build a 22-13 lead and went on to close things out.

Michelle Feiser collected 21 assists for HPU, while Pickens and Kim Anderson contributed a match-high 15 digs.

Wright led the Tar Heels with eight kills on a .467 hitting percentage. UNC out-hit HPU by a .365 to .091 spread.

The Panthers will face East Carolina, Mercer, Furman and Lamar this weekend at the City Hotel & Bistro Invitational in Greenville, N.C.
