Box Score Katie O'Dell tied her career-high and recorded her fourth-double double of the season (20 points, 12 rebounds), but host Coastal Carolina rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to down the Panthers, 72-65, in Big South Conference action Monday night in Kimbel Arena.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Panthers, who fell to 13-11 and 7-4 in the Conference. Coastal Carolina improved to 11-12 and 5-6 in the League.
Charlena Martin (17 points, six boards),
Tonya Tripp (11 points) and
Kate Jenner (10 points) also reached double-figures for HPU.
High Point jumped out to a 15-point lead (25-10) early, but saw the Lady Chants close the half with a 17-6 run. The Panthers led 37-33 at halftime.
HPU held a 12-point second half lead after O'Dell (the reigning Big South Player of the Week) hit a three-pointer at the 15:58 mark to make it 49-37, but the Lady Chants chipped away and tied the game up at 54-54 with 9:18 remaining.
The Panthers wouldn't lead again, although HPU tied the game again at 60-60 when Tripp drained two free throws with 4:18 left. But the Lady Chants rallied and got the difference-maker when
Nikki Reddick (18 points) hit a three pointer with 36 seconds left for a 69-63 CCU cushion.
Cyndie Troutman led all scorers with 22 points for Coastal, which outrebounded the Panthers by a 41-34 clip.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday when they host first-place and Big South-unbeaten Liberty. The start time is 4:00 pm.
