Emily Lanham's goal in the 5th minute held up and gave High Point a 1-0 win over Coastal Carolina in the regular-season women's soccer finale for both teams Saturday night at Albion Millis Stadium.
Lanham scored her third goal of the year on a near-post shot off assists by
Amy Anzovino and
Jen Evans for what turned out to be the only goal of the game.
Courtney Noel recorded her third shutout in the last five games, and made four saves in the process for the Panthers (9-8-0, 4-4-0 Big South), who have earned the No. 5 seed for this week's Big South Tournament and will meet Liberty in the first round at noon Thursday in Charleston.
The Panthers were seeded sixth when they won last season's Big South Tournament.
The Lady Chants fall to 6-10-2 (2-5-1), but had several quality chances to tie the score despite fielding a 10-player lineup for the final 33:29 after goalkeeper
Jaclyn Stoll was sent off with a red card.
High Point held a 14-11 advantage in shots. Stoll made two saves for CCU, while
Leah Barrett tallied a save in relief.
In the 57th minute, Anzovino broke free of the Coastal defense and raced with the ball toward the goal before colliding with Stoll in front of the box. Following a collision, the red card was issued, and Barrett replaced Stoll in goal.
Roughly a minute later, the Panthers dodged three rapid-fire Coastal bullets in a row.
Laura Weiler's shot off a corner kick by
Bobbie Parsons was saved at the line by HPU defender
Traci Andersen. The rebound went directly back to Weiler, who immediately fired another shot which Noel blocked back at her, and then another which Noel saved again.
The Panthers came up with another big defensive stop in the 66th minute when
Megan Fielden caught up with Coastal's
Kristine Kingsbury on a breakaway and took the ball away to preserve the shutout.
Seven Panthers -- Lanham,
Carolyn Bader,
Tanya Wolf,
Jamie Burnham,
Lori DiSalvo-Walsh,
Anni Svensson and
Lena Svensson -- were honored as part of Senior Night festivities before the contest.
