Women's Soccer Falls At Radford, 2-1

Radford got goals from Jonita Hooker and Nikki Porter to edge High Point, 2-1, in Big South Conference women's soccer action Wednesday night at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium.

The Panthers dip to 8-8-0 (3-4-0 in Big South play), while the host Highlanders improve to 10-6-1 (5-1-1).

Jen Evans, the reigning Big South Player of the Week, gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead with a tally in the 14th minute. She fired a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out for the score.

The play was set up as Amy Anzovino pushed the ball back to Carolyn Bader who touched it over to Evans for the one-timer that beat RU goalie Tara Oleartchick to the left.

Radford got an equalizer at the 21:06 mark on Hooker's 10th goal of the season. A failed clearing attempt in the box went right to Hooker, and she put it into a wide-open net from 10 yards out.

Porter then gave put RU the lead for good in the 25th minute, splitting two Panther defenders and beating HPU keeper Courtney Noel to the right. The play was set up on a 25-yard through ball by Debbie Leach.

Both teams had scoring chances in the second half, but key defensive plays kept the slate clean. The Panthers had two chances on a corner kick in the 72nd minute, but the near post defender stopped the initial header by Wendy Williams and the rebound shot by Tanya Wolf was saved by Oleartchick, who finished with four saves.

High Point had one more great chance in the 83rd minute when Evans sent a low cross to the far post, but Emily Lanham chipped it over the wide open goal. Radford countered when Erin Crane fired from about 20 yards, but Noel made an outstanding leaping save (one of her six on the night).

The Panthers out-shot the Highlanders by a 14-12 count.

HPU hosts Coastal Carolina in its final regular-season match Saturday night (7:00 pm). Panther seniors Bader, Lanham, Wolf, Jamie Burnham and Lori DiSalvo-Walsh will be honored before the game.
