Women's Basketball Falls To UNC Asheville In Double OT, 68-66

Box Score

High Point got 17 points from Charlena Martin and a career-high 15 points from Chan Ingram, but UNC Asheville's Brittany Hendley converted a dramatic layup off a steal with 14 seconds left in double-overtime to lift the Bulldogs past HPU, 68-66, in Big South women's basketball action in the Justice Center.

The Panthers dropped to 7-9 and 1-2 in the Big South, while UNC Asheville won its ninth-straight game and improved to 13-3, 3-0 in the Conference.

High Point had a chance to win the game when Emily Mills rebounded a missed shot with six seconds left in the second overtime and was fouled. She missed both free throws and the Bulldogs got the rebound. Kristal Hood was fouled with four seconds left. She made one of two free throws to give the Bulldogs a 68-66 lead. A last-second halfcourt heave by Mills was short as UNCA escaped with the victory.

UNCA placed four players in double-figures. The Bulldogs were led by Hood's game-high 20 points and Tonisha Jackson's 14 points, 13 rebounds and six steals. Meridith Grant contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds and Velinda Vuncannon added 12 points.

Katie O'Dell recorded her second double-double of the season for the Panthers (12 points, 10 rebounds).

The Panthers took a 66-65 lead with 1:13 left when Ingram sank a 3-pointer. After a UNCA miss, High Point was trying to run clock when Vuncannon forced a steal and got the ball to Hood. Hood made a perfect pass to Hendley, who scored on a layup to give the Bulldogs the lead for good at 67-66.

HPU had chances to win at the end of regulation and the end of the first overtime period, but was unable to convert. High Point trailed by five in the first overtime period but roared back with a 7-0 run to take a 58-56 on two free throws from Ingram with 1:20 left. The Bulldogs tied the game at 58-58 when Hood sank a short jumper at the 1:04 mark.

Asheville led for most of the second half as it built an early eight-point lead only to see the Panthers rally to tie the game on five different occasions. They took their first lead of the second half with 36 seconds left in regulation when Tonya Tripp sank two free throws for a 51-49 lead. Hood was then fouled with 13 seconds left and she hit both charity tosses to tie the game at 51-51. High Point could not get a shot off and the game went to overtime.

The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday when they host Charleston Southern in a Big South Conference showdown in the Millis Center. The start time is set for 4:00 pm.
