Men's Soccer Edged By Marshall, 1-0

High Point fell 1-0 at Marshall in men's soccer action Friday night at Huntington's Sam Hood Field.

The Panthers, who defeated the Thundering Herd as recently as 2001 in Huntington, dip to 0-2 on the season. Marshall improves to 1-1.

Granit Caushaj's goal in the 45th minute was the difference. Brandon Mason was credited with the assist.

High Point, which started five freshmen, outshot Marshall 16-13, and didn't allow a single shot on goal in the second half.

"Overall it was a great team effort," said High Point head coach Peter Broadley. "There was so much improvement from our first game [Wednesday's 3-0 loss to UNC Greensboro]. Defensively we were very tight and just made a series of errors at the end of the first half which led to their only goal."

The Panthers' best chance to score came in the 75th minute when senior Kenzo Tochiki's shot hit the post and bounced harmlessly away, preserving the win for the Herd.

Matt Long made two saves in goal, while Chris Archer and Kirk Rudder each had four shots for the Panthers. Marshall keeper Joe Nebel stopped seven shots, including an HPU chance in the final minute, to literally save the game for Marshall.

HPU returns to action Wednesday afternoon at Wofford. Kickoff in Spartanburg is set for 5:00 pm.
