Davidson Blanks Men's Soccer, 1-0

Cass Beltz scored the lone goal of the game in the 73rd minute to lead Davidson past High Point, 1-0, in a defensive struggle Wednesday night at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Wildcats improved to 5-1-2 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 1-6-1.

The teams played a scoreless first half with very few scoring chances for each team. HPU held the Wildcats without a shot-on-goal before halftime, and outshot the visitors 5-4 in the period.

Davidson wouldn't get its first shot-on-goal until the 72nd minute, when Keith Nicholson's shot was pushed away by HPU keeper Matt Long and the rebound shot by Baltz went wide.

Moments later, the Wildcats broke through when Baltz took a pass from Mac Wilkie just inside the 18-yard box and fired a shot past Long for the only score of the game at 72:15.

The Panthers had their best scoring chance in the 75th minute, when Kirk Rudder beat his man down the left sideline and launched a cross just out of reach of a streaking Chris Archer in front of the goal.

Bart Creasman
made three saves and recorded his second shutout of the year for Davidson, which out-shot the Panthers 14-6.

Long made two saves in goal for HPU.

High Point returns to action against Big South foe VMI Saturday morning. Kickoff in Lexington, Va., is scheduled for 11:00 am.
