Day 2: High Point Volleyball Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 High Point dropped a pair of matches on the second day of the 2003 High Point Invitational.

The Panthers fell to Virginia Commonwealth in four games and Appalachian State in three games.

Following are recaps of all five of the day's matches:

GAME 5: Georgia State 3, Georgia Southern 2
In the day's opening match, Georgia State outlasted Georgia Southern in a five-game barn-burner. Georgia State fought off a pair of match points and downed their in-state rivals by a linescore of 30-23, 26-30, 30-24, 25-30, 17-15.

The Eagles led 11-5 in the decisive fifth game, but the Panthers fought back to tie things up at 13-13. Georgia State then fought off a pair of match points before closing things out with a 17-15 win.

For Georgia State, Molly Sapp had 20 kills and Amanda Sapp 17, while Shelbylynn McBride provided 13 kills and a team-high 15 digs.  April DeCoste had 57 assists.

Martina Veiglova led the way for Georgia Southern with 23 kills and 12 digs. Also reaching double-figures offensively were Janice Pressley (16 kills) and Erin Martin (13 kills). Megan Lippi had 20 digs and Susan Winkleman 30 assists.

GAME 6: VCU 3, High Point 1
The Rams won the first two games and then weathered a High Point rally to down the Panthers. Laura Connell led VCU with 17 kills and added 12 digs. Meghan Boyle (13 kills) and Karyn Engel (12 kills) were also strong offensively for VCU. Lindi Sheppard tallied 45 assists and Griselle Lopez Perira recorded 19 digs.

For the Panthers, Kamarsha Ryan led the way with a match-high 25 kills, while Lindsey Pickens added 17 kills and 25 dugs and Heather Brooks tallied 15 kills. Heather Butt provided 59 assists.

The line score was 30-22, 30-26, 22-30, 31-29.


GAME 7: Georgia State 3, Appalachian State 1
Georgia State finished the tournament unbeaten (4-0) with a four-game win over the Mountaineers by a line score of 33-31, 29-31, 30-27, 30-25.

Amanda Sapp recorded 16 kills and Shelbylynn McBride 14 kills to lead the Panthers. McBride had 12 digs defensively, and April DeCoste collected 44 assists.

ASU got 20 kills from Samantha Guidici, 17 from Katherine Dean, and 14 from Kali Rumberger. Starla Gustafson provided 16 digs, and Amber Mangrum added 56 assists.

GAME 8: Georgia Southern 3, VCU 0
Georgia Southern (3-1) got 19 kills and 15 digs from Martina Veiglova and 13 kills from Erin Martin to sweep the Rams, 30-25, 30-17, 30-26.

The Eagles also got 23 digs from Megan Lippi and 27 assists from Susan Winkleman.

The Rams (2-2) were led by Lindi Sheppard's nine kills and 23 assists. Griselle Lopez Pereira provided 12 digs defensively.

GAME 9: Appalachian State 3, High Point 0
The Mountaineers (2-1) scored a three-game win over the host Panthers (0-4) by a score of 30-27, 30-11, 30-24.

Jackie Jennings paced ASU with a match-high 20 kills, while Kali Rumberger added 15 kills and 14 digs. Amber Mangrum collected 37 assists.

Lindsey Pickens led HPU with 15 kills, and Kamarsha Ryan also reached double-figures with 10 kills. Heather Butt had 28 assists, and Kim Anderson provided 12 digs.
