Panthers Knock Off Highlanders, 75-64

Dustin Van Weerdhuizen scored 21 points and led a pack of four High Point players in double-figures in the Panthers' 75-64 victory over Radford Sunday afternoon in men's basketball action at the Millis Center.

HPU (6-13, 2-6 Big South) broke a seven-game losing streak with 18 points from Joe Knight, 15 points from Brent Halsch (tying his career-high) and 12 points and 10 rebounds from Kashawn Hampton.

Hampton's effort was good for his first-career double-double.

Radford got a game-high 24 points from freshman Whit Holcomb-Faye, but fell to 5-15, 3-5 in Big South play.

Playing without the Big South's leading scorer, Danny Gathings (who served a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules), the Panthers scored 17 of the game's first 23 points and led 34-23 at halftime. HPU held the Highlanders to just 24 percent shooting (7-of-29) from the field before the break.

The Highs rallied in the second half, using a 7-0 run to cut a 12-point deficit to two at 42-40 with 13:02 to play on a three-pointer by Andre Bynum. But the Panthers answered with a 13-1 run of their own to take a 53-41 advantage on Hampton's layup with 8:09 left. RU didn't get within six points the rest of the way.

Radford's Kyle Zaharias pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in a losing cause.

HPU begins a three-game road trip Wednesday night (7:00 pm) at UNC Asheville.
