Chants' Three-Point Barrage Bombs Panthers, 89-71

Coastal Carolina went crazy from behind the arc at home for the second-straight season against High Point, shooting 73 percent from long-range to torch the Panthers, 89-71, Monday night at Kimbel Arena.

Dustin Van Weerdhuizen led the Panthers (6-16, 2-9 Big South) with a career-high 27 points.

The Chanticleers (12-10, 4-5) placed five players in double-figures, led by Torrey Butler (18 points), Tony Darden (16 points) and Pele Paelay (15 points).

Last season, Coastal made a school-record 16 three-pointers (16-of-27 for 59.3 percent) en route to a 98-76 win over the Panthers. Wednesday night, the Chants drained 11 of 15 shots behind the arc. Butler and E.J. Gallup each had three apiece.

The Chants built a 14-point first-half lead at 26-12 before the Panthers clawed back and cut the advantage to 45-36 at halftime on a Van Weerdhuizen jumper at the buzzer.

HPU was able to pull within 62-55 on a three-point play by Joe Knight with 11:54 left, but that was as close as the Panthers would get.

Knight returned after missing Saturday's 61-56 loss at Charleston Southern to play 34 minutes and score 18 points.

Danny Gathings added 12 points for HPU, while Van Weerdhuizen collected a game-high nine rebounds to finish one board short of a double-double.

HPU has gets a visit from Winthrop Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
