High Point will make its first-ever appearance in the Big South women's soccer championship game following a 3-1 victory over Birmingham-Southern Friday night in the semifinals of the 2003 Radisson Hotel High Point Big South Women's Soccer Championship at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Panthers (10-9-0) got goals from Emily Lanham, Tanya Wolf and Anni Svensson to punch their tickets for Saturday night's final (7:00 pm) against UNC Asheville. The winner earns the Big South's automatic bid to the 2003 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.
HPU broke through in the 43rd minute when Lanham launched a shot from just inside the 18-yard box and beat BSC keeper Andria Gray for a 1-0 advantage at intermission. Wolf and Eileen Mazeika earned assists on the play.
High Point followed that with a Wolf goal in the 50th minute off two nice passes from Mazeika and Jinene Enders, and pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute on a score by Anni Svensson with an assist from Ryan Hays.
BSC (7-12-2) got on the board with an 87th minute penalty-kick goal from Sara Gillam.
HPU outshot BSC 18-12, including 13-2 before halftime. Katie Smith made four saves in net for High Point, while Gray stopped four shots for BSC.
UNC Asheville (11-6-2) eliminated Charleston Southern 3-0 in Friday's first semifinal, and defeated the Panthers, 2-0, in the only regular-season meeting between the teams on Oct. 15 in High Point.
